A few days after announcing Moblin 2.1, Intel immediately released it to the public and is now available for download. Moblin 2.1 is a Linux based operating system.

The development of the operating system has been managed by the Linux Foundation. The software is primarily designed for developers as a preview version. The new operating system features plenty of improvements in user interface and applications. You can directly download it at the Moblin’s web site.

Upgrading Version 2.0

Version 2.1 of Moblin will upgrade the previous Moblin 2.0. Intel envisioned the original Moblin as an operating system for Netbooks. But with the introduction of the Moblin 2.1, Intel is targeting the adoption of its operating system by desktop users and those using handheld devices with Atom processors.

Developers are quick to point out that the new Moblin 2.1 is the first set of release over version 2.0. It features new developments and functionalities. According to a blog post on the Moblin web site, the latest Moblin release targets Netbooks only. However, versions for hand held devices will be released if the hardware requirements for these platforms are met.

User Interface of Moblin 2.1 Should Have a Make Over

There is a need for Intel to redesign the Moblin 2.1 user interface. Specifically, the operating system should be able to fit into the different screen sizes of its target devices like Nettops, Netbooks, and hand held devices.

Intel should also provide support for other screen resolutions of Nettops. These Nettops normally have screen range of 7 to 12 inches. On the other hand, Netbooks are capable of interfacing with larger screens.

Some Interesting Apps of Moblin 2.1

Moblin 2.1 offers some interesting applications that are new to users. The new applications such as the Moblin Garage and the Application Installer will enable users to easily download software. The facility also allows users to quickly install or remove applications.

Another great feature of the Moblin 2.1 is its enhanced 3G support capability. This new feature seeks to improve the utilization of mobile broadband. Most importantly, the operating system also features improved support for Bluetooth.

Language support of the new operating system is commendable and it also carries updated Linux kernel. Aside from these upgrades, version 2.1 of Moblin has specific support for Pine Trail Platform. Pine Trail is the next generation Netbook platform of Intel. This platform integrates the Atom central processing unit with a graphic processor. According to estimates, this platform could be released next year.

Bug Hunting for Developers

The preview versions are made available to developers in order to find bugs and glitches in the operating system. This type of release allows developers to create applications and software based on the architecture of the operating system.

A wider release of Moblin 2.1 is planned at the end of the year. Netbooks are the main market of Moblin. The operating system has been used on machines of Asus, Dell, and Acer. Moblin is currently installed on Dell’s Inspiron Mini Netbooks.
